Sermon Series: Terrific Tension
Title: You Want Terrific?
It’s Going to Get Tense!

Terrific-.of great size, amount, or intensity.
Tension-the state of being stretched tight.

Terrific tension speaks to a relational dynamic where you and God engage in authentic, transparent, tense exchanges with terrific outcomes.

Matthew 16
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”
15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.
18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.
19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”

21 From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.
22 But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!”
23 Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away (Get behind) from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”

*1 You Want Terrific, Answer The Hard Question, WHO IS JESUS TO YOU?

Matthew 16:
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”
15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus is around his disciples.
He looks at them and asks two of the most important questions ever presented;
Who does the world say I am?
And more importantly who do you say I am?
Jesus was not asking for an update on his influence metric.
Jesus was not inquiring on how many followers he had on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or YouTube.
Jesus was not interested in acquiring a metrics confirmation as a pertains to influence and marketability status.
Jesus with great intentionality submitted two questions for the purpose of his disciples becoming fully aware and immersed in the revelation of Christ.
In other words, I want you to publicly and collectively tell me for the purpose of informing yourself, who does the world say I am?
After you give me that answer I will proceed to ask you the most important question;
who do YOU my followers who spent time with me,
who prayed with me,
who walked with me,
who performed miracles with me,
who experienced glory with me,
who saw the impossible with me,
who healed the sick with me,
who cast out Devils with me,
who shifted atmospheres with me;
Who do you say I am?
You see the world will never discover the true meaning of Christ until the church embraces the fullness of Christ.
The world will never discover what the followers of Christ have yet to clearly define.
You see it’s time for us in
our trials and testimonies,
our postings and prayers,
our actions and reactions,
our living and forgiving,
answer the question that Jesus asked his disciples 2000 years ago.
I truly believe that the Holy Spirit is still asking the followers of Jesus, “Who do you say Jesus is?”
Because when we know, they will know. When we get the revelation, they will experience redemption.
The world may very well describe Jesus as a revolutionary, philosopher, a social justice advocate, an ideologue, a cultural reformer, a societal architect, a spiritual innovator.
I have seen universities, scholars, theologians, philosophers and influencers with no ill intention place Jesus amongst the list of historical figures as to say that they all somehow occupy the same space.
I have seen Jesus placed next to Ghandi, Buddha, Mohammed.
I have seen Jesus placed next to George Washington and Martin Luther King Jr. but with great due deference and biblically substantiated humility I must with clarity and conviction declare the following truth; Jesus is on list all by himself!
Only Jesus was born to a virgin.
Only Jesus lived sinlessly.
Only Jesus …

Messiah-SON OF THE WHAT? Who?
Dead,

Son of the LIVING GOD!
*2 You Want Terrific, Let God Define You!
Jesus in essence states the following;
You told me who I am so let me tell you who you are!
The moment you discover who I am you discover who you truly are.
Simply stated,
You will never know who you are unless you first know who God is.
You will never know who you are unless you know who Jesus is.
The moment you discover Jesus is the moment you discover your destiny.
The moment you discover Jesus you discover your dream.
The moment you discover Jesus you discover your assignment.
The moment you discover Jesus you discover your calling.
The moment he discovered Jesus you discover your purpose.
The moment you discover Jesus you’ll discover your destiny.
You are the rock.
In other words, your declaration is solid. Your decoration is permanent.
Your declaration cannot be moved.
Your declaration is not fluid your declaration is eternal.
Your declaration is a constant.
The words that came out of your mouth unleashed a permanent designation.
The words that came out of your mouth just defined you.
The words that came out of your mouth provoke me to give you a new name.
The words that came out of your mouth activated your future.
What you said just changed everything.
In other words, starting today and from this moment on, because you know who I am, YOU ARE NOT The byproduct of what others did to you, what you did to others, of what you did to yourself…
You are not the heir to a multi generational curse.
You are not abandoned.
You are not broke, busted or disgusted.
You are not hopeless or fatherless.
You are who I am for you.
You are what I did for you.
You are what I paid for you.
You are what I died for.
You are what I resurrected for.
You are who I am coming back for!
You are a child of God! John 1:12
You are a friend of God! John 15:14
You are the temple of God! 1 Corinth 3:16
In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us. Colossians 3:11
BTW:
and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.
(We are not a country.
We are not a corporation.
We are not a philosophical enclosure.
Etc..
We are ONE OF ONE!
The only institution that hell cannot, shall not will not conquer!
19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”
*3 You Want Terrific, Put Hell Behind You!
23 Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, (Get behind me) Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”
He is not saying Peter became Satan.
He is not saying Peter is forever more the devil.
Jesus is saying, what you said is humanistic. I interpret your humanistic declaration as one coming from the pit of hell. Therefore get behind me!
Wait, GET BEHIND ME!
Get behind me!
Three powerful words!
Get behind me!
GET BEHIND ME!
Matthew 16:23
Jesus looks at Peter after a humanistic declaration that ran counter to the Messiah’s purpose and without hesitation uttered these words,
“Satán, get behind me!”
Three powerful words!
Get behind me!
In other words, ……
Those words will not define me.
Those words will not deter me.
Those words will not defeat me.
Get behind me!
Do not permit anything that runs counter to your God ordained purpose to go in front of you, guide you or occupy your future.
Today, look at the lie before you and say, “Get behind me!”
Speak to those depressing thoughts and say “Get behind me!”
Confront everything out of alignment with the word, will and Spirit of God and shout “Get behind me!”
