Sermon Series: Terrific Tension

Title: The Tension of Change

He’s not just the God of the process, He is the process!

John 2

1 The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,

2 and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration.

3 The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”

5 But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons.

7 Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled,

8 he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions.

9 When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over.

10 “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”

11 This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

*1 The God that never changes has the power to change everything!

This is the story of God changing water into wine.

We must begin discussing change.

How many people here do well with changes?

How many have a difficult time with changes?

David Bowie-Changes!

We live in a world of constant change.

Everything, literally everything seems to be changing.

Yet in the midst of unbridled, unparalleled, unprecedented change, permit me to share with you a powerful constant in a world full of variables; God never changes!

God never changes!

God never changes!

Seasons may change but God never changes.

Technology may change but God never changes.

Ideologies and social constructs may change but God never changes.

The occupant of the White House may change but God never changes.

Relationships may change but God never changes.

The hair on your head may change but God never changes.

The balance in your bank account may change but God never changes.

Your relationship status may change but God never changes.

The people around you may change but God never changes.

The thoughts in your mind may change but God never changes.

I am the Lord and I do not change. Malachi 3:6

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. James 1:17

With that being said, it is important to note the following; we live in a world where influencers, politicians, sports figures, governmental officials, truly believe driven by the real culprit, the enemy of light, that they have the power to wake up in the morning and make changes.

As a Church that finishes every service with the following declaration, “Hey New Season, lets do one thing together, let’s go change the world!”

We not only believe in chang, we demand change.

However the problem of our day in age lies embedded in a global movement of change OUT of alignment with the word and the will of God.

In other words, very powerful forces believe that they have the power and the authority to change whatever they want even the truths, definitions, institutions, and realities ordained, anointed, and established by God Almighty.

But permit me today to speak directly into this atmosphere of deconstructionism, anarchy, chaos, relativism and the idea that forces under the influence can emerge and can do away with absolutely everything they want and nothing can stop them.

Ready for this;

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

Jesus never changes!

You can’t change Jesus!

You can’t change what Jesus did on the cross.

You can’t change the shedding of his blood.

You can’t change the empty tomb.

You can’t change the upper room.

You can’t change the Father, you can’t change the Son, and you can’t change the Holy Spirit.

You can’t change the word of God.

You can’t change the promises of God.

You can’t change the fact that those that call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.

And BTW;

According to God’s word there are other things that never change.

Gods word never changes!

Psalm 33:11 says, “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations.” His Word is Timeless and His Promises are Everlasting!

Matthew 24:35 says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” God’s counsel never changes.

I want to remind pastors and leaders around the world we may change the stage but the word of God never changes.

We may change our seats and carpeting but the word of God never changes.

We may change our delivery platforms but the word of God never changes.

We may change the way we dress in order to engage the emerging generation but the word of God never changes.

We may change the songs we sing with the word of God never changes.

(The number one problem in America is not the loud proponent of lies. The number one problem in America are the silent prophets of truth.

Simply stated, when Pastors stand up on Sunday morning and preach the truth then our nations will change!

Show me a silent Pastor and I will show you a bound community.

Show me a pastor that refuses to preach the truth because it is politically incorrect and culturally inconvenient and I will show you a community in a region bound by idolatry and modern-day witchcraft.

But the moment pastors in America say enough is enough and preach the truth with love, in and out of season about then we will change the world!)

When Pastors stand up cities are saved.

When Pastors stand up communities come together.

When pastors stand up awakenings take place. When Pastors stand up cultures experience reformation.

When Pastor stands up the next generation does greater things.

Because the word of God never changes!

Gods calling and gifts upon your life never change!

Romans 11:29 says, “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”

If God has ever been good, then He will always be good because He never changes!

The God that never changes has the power to change everything!

*2 Change can be triggered by the spirit of expectancy!

They ran out of wine.

Mary the mother of Jesus looks at Jesus and tells him do something.

Jesus literally looked at his mother and said woman, it’s not my time.

Let me break this down for you.

The response of Jesus is a clear indication that what Mary was demanding from Jesus was not for Jesus to go to the nearest Raley, Belair, Safeway, or even Walmart or Target and pick up some happy juice.

Mary was telling Jesus, “Go ahead, show us your glory.

Go ahead, perform a miracle.

Go ahead, show these people who you really are.

Go ahead, do what no one else can do.

How do we know?

Because of Jesus’ response.

His response was the following; “My time has not come yet.

In other words, Isaiah chapter 60:22 “At the right time I the Lord will make it happen.

Wait a moment. Jesus looks at his mom and says woman, it’s not my time yet.

It’s not my time to start performing miracles.

It’s not my time to start showing people my Father’s glory.

It’s not my time yet to reveal to everyone around me that I am the Son of man, the Son of God, the Messiah, the conquer, the word made flesh.

Jesus looks at Mary and tell her it’s not my time. What did Mary do next?

Mary ignored the words of Jesus and told the people around him, “Get ready, Jesus is about to do something!”

Why would Mary contradict Jesus?

It may look like a contradiction, but it was actually an affirmation.

Stop!

In order to understand why Mary  said what she said, you must go back 30 years.

30 years prior an angel of the Lord visited that same Mary.

Luke 1:

27 The angel went to a virgin promised in marriage to a descendant of David named Joseph. The virgin’s name was Mary.

28 When the angel entered her home, he greeted her and said, “You are favored by the Lord! The Lord is with you.”

29 She was startled by what the angel said and tried to figure out what this greeting meant.

30 The angel told her,

“Don’t be afraid, Mary. You have found favor [a] with God.
31 You will become pregnant, give birth to a son,
and name him Jesus.
32 He will be a great man
and will be called the Son of the Most High.
The Lord God will give him
the throne of his ancestor David.
33 Your son will be king of Jacob’s people forever,
and his kingdom will never end.”

34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be? I’m a virgin.”

35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy child developing inside you will be called the Son of God.

For 30 years Mary waited.

For 30 years Mary sat with the promise.

For 30 years Mary live with a spirit of expectancy.

For 30 years Mary held onto what the angel told her.

And Mary in this wedding, at the wedding through her actions conveyed the following “Enough is enough!

I’ve waited for 30 years.

Hey people around us, get ready, the miracle is coming!

Mary wasn’t contradicting Jesus.

Mary to a great degree unleashed Jesus with her spirit of expectancy.

Mary placed a demand on the anointing upon Jesus and the anointing that was Jesus.

In other words, with great to deference, It’s not about the time, it’s about the need.

When the need becomes desperate, time is no longer the primary motivator.

God’s timing will never be a lid on His children’s needs.

In other words you may think it’s not your time but I have a spirit of expectation that you are about to show us your glory therefore my spirit of expectation has the power to prompt you to show us your glory.

Jeremiah 33:3 if you call upon me I will show you what you have never seen before.

I’m ready for your miracle.

I’m ready for the breakthrough.

I’m ready for the overflow.

I’m ready for you to show us your glory.

I have sat on this promise for 30 years.

And by the way, one could even argue that Jesus provoked all of this.

One could easily argue that all Jesus was waiting for words for a hungry people to place a demand on his anointing.

If Mary would’ve backed off that Miracle would never have taken place. But Mary persistent, insisted, demand. Mary made room for the glory of Christ!

Today we need people to rise up with the spirit of Mary which is the Spirit of the Lord and the spirit of expectancy.

If you’ve been waiting for a long time.

If you’ve been praying for your breakthrough and miracle.

If you can fasting for your breakthrough and miracle.

If you’ve been fighting for your breakthrough and miracle.

I need you to rise up today and do exactly what Mary did.

First speak into the people around you and tell them to get ready.

Mary did not tell the people around them “there is a possibility that God may show up.”

Mary did not say “if you guys fast and pray hopefully God will show up.”

Mary did not say “I sure wish God will show up.”

Mary looked at the people around them and said “You  all need to get ready, Jesus is about to do something!

I sense the Spirit of the Lord today in this place as I deliver this word with a clear message for everyone here and everyone listening online; get ready, Jesus is about to do something awesome!

Tell your neighbor get ready, Jesus is about to show up!

Get ready, Jesus is about to save your family!

Get ready, Jesus is about to heal your body!

Get ready, Jesus is about to turn things around!

Get ready, Jesus is about to supply your needs and give you more than enough.

Jesus is about to change your water into wine.

Jesus is about to give you joy, unspeakable joy!

*Change Comes With a Process!

*Change Comes With a Process

Jesus changed water into wine.

Water is not wine!

You don’t have to graduate from Stanford or UC Davis to be fully aware of the following fact; water is not wine.

Water can be naturally found in so many different places a creek, a stream, a river, the sea.

But wine requires a process.

Water does not.

Water is a natural element.

Wine is the outcome of a process.

In order to have wine you first need to have a vineyard.

The Vineyard is the place where grapes grow on the vine.

When the grapes are ready then the grapes are harvested.

Subsequently the grapes are pressed the juice is separated from the grape skin.

You see it’s a process.

Jesus changes water into wine.

He change something that does not require a process into something that requires a process.

And he did it immediately.

In other words, our God it’s not just the God of the process, HE is the process!

There are things in life that do take time but the God that we serve transcends time he can break in and out of the space-time continuum in such a way that just like that, somebody tell your neighbor “just like that!”….

Our God is the God that just like that can change water into wine.

I hear the Lord say..

I am changing water into wine, turning tears into joy, pain into praise, I’m making all things beautiful!

If God can make wine out of water, he can make a heaven out of your hell.

If God can make wine out of water, he can make a breakthrough out of your brokenness.
If God can make wine out of water he can create a future out of your past.
Stop!
Wine is 85% water.
He had something to work with.
Even though he is the same God that can make something out of nothing Genesis 1:1, his first miracle was not to make something out of nothing.
His first miracle was to make something awesome out of something that was not.
In a matter fact back in the day wine was safer than water because the fermentation process killed the bacteria something that the water was almost certain to carry prior to filtration systems.
In other words water would get you sick.
Yet the water when it goes through a process  mixed with the grapes that are crushed would not.
Another words, prophetically and spiritually speaking God wants to change your 85% water into 100% wine.
God wants to take what you have, remove the bacteria, the sin, the doubt, the unforgiveness, the unbelief, the hatred, the animosity, the jealousy, the anger, the depression, the anxiety, the fear, the confusion,,the negative labels, the false definitions, and redeem it with the wine of his spirit.
Give God what you have and he will change it. Give God your water and he will make it into wine. Give God your mind and he will renew it. Give God your heart and he will change it. Give God your dreams and he will sanctify them.
Get your jars and fill them up with what you have.
I’d dare you to tell me you don’t know me, there’s  nothing in me that God can work with. Really?
The fact that you went through hell when you made it means that you have resilience, fortitude, tenacity, perseverance, wherewithal.
It means there’s something in you.
The fact that he created you in his image.
Genesis 1:27
The fact that he knitted you together in your mothers womb and you are wonderfully made. Psalm 139:14
The fact that he called you and ordained you and appointed you before you were born.
Romans 8:30
What am I tell you no matter how infected with bacteria your life may be the moment righteous fermentation takes place, the moment the vicarious finished work of Christ comes in contact with your water, NAPA, can’t do better than this!
He saves the best for last!
